As the cold rains continue in North Texas, we were reminded that there is something much worse than rain outside the house: rain inside the house.
Imagine relaxing inside and winding down in the quiet of the evening. Then… you hear the dreaded drip. You get up to investigate, only to find your living room flooded and all of your valuables damaged by water.
What do you do?
We have a list of the next steps to help you take care of your home and prevent future damage.
Here are 5 simple steps to fix a roof leak:
1 Protect your valuables
Once you locate where the leak is coming from, the first step is to prevent as much damage as possible. Start by protecting your valuables (i.e. electronics, furniture, jewelry, etc.), or any other items that can be damaged by water. Cover the area with a tarp or any other large waterproof plastic to prevent more damage from occurring.
2 Catch the leak(s) to prevent further damage
Next, grab a bucket… or any other waterproof container and place it underneath the leak to catch the dripping water. Set an old towel at the bottom of the bucket to prevent water from splashing out and damaging the floor/carpet. If the ceiling has started to bubble because of excess water, do not puncture it. Contact a professional roofing general contractor to help contain the leak before it gets worse.
3 Eliminate the water
Once you have the leak is contained, dry all flooring, furniture, and anything else that was affected by the water thoroughly. Excess water can stain woods and flooring, which can also cause mold to grow in your home. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may need to call a professional floor/carpet cleaning company to remove the excess water.
4 Have your roof inspected by a professional
A simple inspection of your roof will not only assess the cause of the damage, but using a professional roofing general contractor will help you identify what repairs are needed to prevent future damage. It is also important to schedule an inspection before filing a claim with your insurance company. In some cases, if the leak wasn’t caused by a storm, then the insurance wouldn’t be liable to cover it.
5 Repair the roof
Once the damage has been assessed, a professional roofing company will work with you to begin the restoration process. HammerHead Roof will repair your roof quickly, and will not charge a penny until the job is complete. This includes the precautionary setup, as well as the cleanup and removal. The only thing more satisfying than a roof that doesn’t leak anymore is the peace of mind that comes with having the expertise and care of a professional.
